Kevin and Linda Found the Perfect Epcon Home in Their Own Hometown

Kevin and Linda express joy of building an Epcon home

Kevin and Linda weren’t looking to move when they wandered into a model home in a new Epcon community. They were just curious. But that initial tour left such an impression that when Kevin was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a short time later, they knew where they needed to turn.

“When we walked into the house for the first time, it was absolutely beautiful,” said Linda. “We were in awe of it and we thought, ‘this is this is going to be a good place for us.’”

A Smooth Design Process With Accessible Options in Mind

Epcon Communities offers design options with the future in mind, like single-level living with wide doorways and hallways available and minimal stairs. Open-concept designs and large windows allow plenty of natural light in the home. And yet, home buyers can make changes to the home to suit their lifestyle and needs.

Kevin and Linda opted for a few personalizations of their own. “We got rid of the fireplace because we're in Florida for the winter,” said Linda. With the extra foot of space, they added an entertainment center. They also opted to remove the sitting room from the primary suite, providing a more spacious and thoughtful design for their needs.

In addition to personalizing the floor plan, Linda enjoyed choosing the perfect finishes and fixtures for their new home. “They asked us if we would like to have their interior designer present when we were making our selections,” she said. Having professional help from Epcon’s team expedited the process so they could leave as planned for their winter in Florida. “She was very helpful and we had a lot of nice selections,” Linda said.

Building a Home From 1,000 Miles Away

How did building a home in the Midwest while snowbirding in Florida go for the couple?

"We were really part of the decision-making,”  said Linda. She described the construction management software used to share the progress with the couple.

Kevin and Linda were called each week and received photos of the progress through the software. They could see what was accomplished so far and discuss what was on the schedule for the upcoming week. The thoughtful process made building their home seamless and stress-free, even from a distance. And, they didn’t feel left out.

A Welcoming Community Gives Peace of Mind

Kevin and Linda lived in their previous home for over 30 years. Since it was only across town from their new Epcon home, they stayed connected with old friends. But they’ve also made new ones.

As a retired physician and educator, the couple was used to having a large community surrounding them. Connecting with immediate neighbors is important to them. “I've always thought that the better you know your neighbor, the safer you are because you watch out for one another,” said Kevin. So when their new neighbors visited to introduce themselves and welcome them to the community, he felt comfortable about the move.

One amenity in their Epcon community is a spacious clubhouse designed for entertaining and meeting new people. Shortly after moving in, Kevin and Linda attended their community’s monthly pot-luck dinner. While sharing a meal, they were able to meet more community members. “They were all very friendly and accepting of us,” Linda said.

Low-Maintenance Living Provides Reassurance

Many people find the low-maintenance lifestyle of an Epcon community an added perk. But for Kevin, it was a blessing. He realized that going forward, their previous home would be increasingly hard to keep up. After moving into their new Epcon home, they both expressed reassurance and confidence that the landscape maintenance would be taken care of. “This is an easy home,” Kevin said.

“We don't have to mow the lawn,” said Linda. “We don't have to trim bushes. So, if I was alone, I could handle it.”

Kevin and Linda have found that there is very little left to do except have fun and enjoy their retirement.
